Develop Your Career & Life Plan
What kind of job do you want? Indeed, are you looking for just a job to pay bills and get by or are you looking for something that truly engages and stimulates you? We often laugh at the question used in interviews; Where do you see yourself in five years? Seriously, where do you see yourself in five years? Have you written out a career plan? Most people will spend more time planning their next weekend’s activities than they will planning their careers. What stimulates you? What work engages you? What would you like to do so that when you wake up in the morning you don’t repeat the usual refrain; “I don’t want to go to work today.”
Do this simple exercise. Take a pen and paper. In 30 seconds write down the top three jobs you really want.
Ask yourself if you are doing everything you can be doing - right now - and every day to get you to where you want to be. You may be in a job you need to do right now but is it taking you to the job you WANT to do. Are you doing something today that will take you to the job you WANT to be doing in five years. If you dislike what you are currently doing - ask yourself what another five years of it will be like.
Develop a personal business plan. Determine your long term career objectives. How do you see your career looking in five, ten, 15 and 20 years. Start planning a series of medium sized goals to get there. Do you need to look at retraining? Do you need to relocate? Do you need to intern somewhere to get some practical experience?
Once you have figured out the medium goals that will lead you to where you WANT to be what smaller steps can you take? Can these smaller steps be divided up into daily tasks? Can you do something - no matter how small it is to take you to the next step? You’ve always wanted to live in Japan and work teaching English? We know you need to take an Teacher of English as a Second Language course. This will be your medium goal to get you there. Every day put a couple of dollars away to pay for it. Every day learn a new word or phrase of Japanese.
We can all take charge right now in what it is we WANT to do. Every goal is attainable if we break it down into smaller, more manageable steps that are not so hard to accomplish. Start today. You will see the momentum build. Tell yourself you ARE that person you want to be in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years from now and you will start to believe it.
Don’t wait. Start today. Every day you don’t do something that will take you to where you want to be is a lost opportunity. It is never too late to get started….. Start with your plan. Where are you headed? How will you get there? Start Now…
